Palmer lies 42 miles northeast of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. Not far above the Matanuska River, Palmer is located between the Talkeetna Mountains and the Chugach Mountains in a wide valley of just under four square miles.
Named after George Palmer, an entrepreneur who built a trading post on the Matanuska River in the 1880s, the town of Palmer was eventually established as a farming community during the 1930s. Today, Palmer continues to thrive as an agricultural town with ideal growing conditions and record-breaking vegetable harvests.

Palmer Real Estate

Palmer Community
In 2010, Palmer had just under 6,000 residents. Some residents commute to Anchorage for work.Palmer offers all levels of schooling for students. Within Palmer, there are two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. As well, Matanuska-Susitna College is in Palmer. In 1999, Palmer High was the first school in Alaska to offer the International Baccalaureate program.
Residents of Palmer host several popular community events every year. The Palmer Pride Picnic is an annual picnic for the Palmer community and surrounding areas. Palmer is also the location of the Alaska State Fair and Parade where world records have been set for the largest vegetable. Almost constant sunshine during the summer months contributes to Palmer vegetables being exceptionally large and very sweet.
Palmer Attractions
As well as hosting popular community events, Palmer offers many other attractions such as public gardens to showcase locally grown plants, the Palmer Museum of History and Art, a golf course, and Hatcher Pass which is a nearby state park used by skiers, snowmobilers, and hikers.
Residents and visitors enjoy exploring the Palmer Historic District with its many original buildings, strolling through Palmer's interesting shops, and dining out in Palmer.
